Watch out: Lateral, not upward. If you need database checks, response-payload assertions or real incident management, moving here solves very little.

Best for: Anyone who wants unlimited monitors for the price of a small VPS

The open-source answer, and a genuinely good one. Unlimited monitors, a pleasant dashboard, plenty of notification integrations, and no per-monitor billing because there is no billing. For a homelab or a cost-sensitive team happy to self-host, this is often the honest best pick.

Watch out: It runs on your infrastructure, which means the thing watching production can go down with production, and nobody is on call for your monitoring. No managed status page SLA, and upgrades and backups are yours.

A SolarWinds product with a long history: synthetic transaction checks from many global locations plus real-user monitoring, which is a genuinely different class of data from an uptime ping.
