Use case

IoT device monitoring

Field devices fail in two ways: they report a bad value, or they stop reporting. Dashboards catch the first if someone is looking. Almost nothing catches the second.

NoDisrupt gives each device a feed URL and a key. The device posts whatever it measures as JSON; every key becomes a metric with its own threshold, and silence past the expected window is an incident in its own right.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    One asset monitor per device

Each gets its own feed URL and bearer key, so a leaked key on one device cannot write to another.

  2. Step 2

    Post JSON readings

Numbers are charted; strings such as a status or firmware version are stored as text. Add timestamp_s if the device buffers readings and sends them late.

  3. Step 3

    Set thresholds per metric

Above, below or equal to a value, for numbers and text alike.

  4. Step 4

    Alert on silence

Choose how long a device may be quiet before it counts as offline. That one setting catches dead batteries, lost connectivity and power cuts.

Any device that can make an HTTPS request
curl -fsS -X POST "https://api.production.nodisrupt.com/monitor/<id>/feed" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FEED_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"metrics": {"tank_level_pct": 62, "pump": "running", "firmware": "2.4.1"}}'

Examples

WatchMetric or checkExample alert
Tank or bin levellevel_pctBelow 15%
Pump or machine statepump (text)Equals fault
Batterybattery_pctBelow 20%
Signal strengthrssi_dbmBelow -85 dBm
Device offlineno data receivedNo reading for 15 minutes
What it does not do
  • HTTPS and JSON only: there is no MQTT broker, LoRaWAN network server or device SDK.
  • No device management: NoDisrupt does not push firmware or configuration to devices.
  • Each device is one monitor, so fleets count against the plan's monitor limit (10 on Free, 250 on Pro, 1000 on Elite).

Common questions

Do I need an SDK or agent on the device?

No. A device that can send an HTTPS POST with a bearer token and a JSON body is enough. The examples on this page use curl and the Python standard library.

What format do readings use?

A JSON object with a "metrics" map of names to values, for example {"metrics": {"temperature_c": 4.5, "door": "closed"}}, plus an optional "timestamp_s" in epoch seconds.

Do I have to define metrics in advance?

No. The first time a key arrives it is created as a metric, charted if numeric, and you add a threshold when you want one.

What happens if the sensor itself stops working?

The monitor alerts. An asset monitor has a window in which it expects data, and silence past that window raises an incident, so a flat battery, a dropped wifi connection or a power cut is reported the same way a bad reading is.

Can I show device status to customers?

Yes. Any monitor can be added to a public status page, so customers see whether the devices behind a service are reporting.
